A tour of the castle and wine tasting
Monbazillac is a French commune located in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, about ten kilometers from Bergerac. In the heart of the vineyard between Saint-Emilion and Sarlat on the Bergerac wine road, the town overlooks the Dordogne valley from the top of its hillsides adorned with vines. It presents a concentrate of patrimonial and natural wealth which will satisfy the most curious.
Known for its 16th century castle classified as a historical monument, Monbazillac is especially renowned for its sweet white wine. The history of this wine goes back to 1080 when monks decided to plant the first vines, thus creating over the centuries 3 noble grape varieties: Semilion, Sauvignon and Muscadelle. A late harvest wine, Monbazillac was the first sweet wine to enter the noble family of Appellations d’Origines Contrôlées.
After the visit of the castle, your guide will take you to meet a winegrower and will make you taste what is called “the Gold of Périgord”.
