The town of Roussillon and the Ochres of Luberon
Located in the town of Roussillon, a few kilometers from Apt in the South East of France, the Ochres of Luberon are actually a massif carved by the waters that once covered Provence. Over the years, erosion has shaped this limestone massif into sand, revealing more than 24 shades of color worthy of the greatest painters’ palettes. These shades evolve according to the time of day and the orientation of the sun, which makes each hike unique.
Ochre has been exploited for a long time in the region and quarries have been opened on this site and have left behind them unique decorations. Today the Ochre of the Luberon, a unique site in France, has become a classified and protected area that extends over nearly 25 kilometers and offers to its visiters exceptional landscapes with shimmering colors that can go from light yellow to intense red.
